description
Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning — the loss of thinking, remembering, and reasoning. About one-third of all people age 85 or older may have some form of dementia. Encouraging independence in dementia patients is essential for better quality of life, instilling a sense of worth, and places less stress on caregivers. Driving is independence. However, driving with dementia may be unsafe for the patient and for the general public depending on the patient's cognitive function. Physicians rely on caregiver testimonials on driving capabilities of the patient and don't have any other metric on determining the ability of the patient to drive safely. Our group is finding a way to measure driving safety in early-stage dementia patients with a driver license in order to assist physicians gauge a patient’s driving capabilities.
